Oud has been treasured across South Asia and the Middle East for centuries, and today it sits at the heart of many of the world’s most luxurious fragrances. If you are new to oud, here is what you need to know.
What is oud?
Oud, also called agarwood, is a dark, fragrant resin that forms inside certain trees. Its rarity and depth have made it one of the most valued materials in perfumery.
What does oud smell like?
Oud is warm, woody and deep, often with smoky, slightly sweet and leathery facets. On its own it can feel intense, which is why modern perfumers usually blend it with citrus, florals, spices, amber and musk to make it smoother and easier to wear.
How to wear oud
A little goes a long way. Start with one or two sprays on your pulse points and let the fragrance develop on your skin. Oud tends to bloom over time, revealing its warmth hours after you apply it.
Oud is especially well suited to evenings, cooler weather, weddings and formal gatherings, but softer, well-balanced oud blends can be worn every day.
Choosing your first oud fragrance
If you are just starting out, look for an oud blend rather than a very raw, concentrated oud. Fresh opening notes and a soft musky base make the fragrance more approachable.
White Oud by ABAM is a good place to begin. It opens with bright citrus, moves into a floral and gently spicy heart, and settles into a warm, smooth oud base with amber and musk. It is unisex, refined and memorable.
